Our History

Our story begins around 1848, when Candlebay Inn was built by local shipbuilders who shaped Freeport’s maritime heritage.

Candlebay Inn in Snow Freeport Maine

Formerly Captain Briggs House
Bed & Breakfast

Candlebay Inn began its life around 1848 as a shipbuilder’s home, built by craftsmen whose work helped shape Freeport’s maritime roots. The house still reflects that era, from its sturdy bones to the barn out back, once used to store goods bound for trade rather than farm life.

Look closely and you’ll see shipbuilding details woven into the structure itself. The barn’s heavy wooden brackets mirror the construction methods used in the great wooden vessels launched along the Harraseeket River, including ships built by John Alphonzo Briggs, a master carpenter whose work once drew thousands to the shoreline.

In 2014, Connie Lay and her family became the stewards of this historic home. With care, intention, and a deep respect for its past, they continue the tradition of welcoming travelers here, just as this house has done for generations.

Meet Your Innkeepers

Candlebay Inn is a charming, dog-friendly bed and breakfast tucked into the heart of Freeport, just a short walk from local shops, restaurants, and the village center. We welcome guests the way we’d welcome friends into our home, with personal attention, a relaxed pace, and a hearty homemade breakfast to start each day.

I purchased the inn in 2014 as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. After years of managing two busy veterinary specialty offices, it mattered deeply to me that Candlebay remain pet friendly. Today, we’re proud to be one of the few places in Freeport where your dog is truly welcome to stay by your side.

We’re a small, family-run inn. It’s me, my daughter Stephanie, and my granddaughter when school allows. Stephanie leads our kitchen and brings years of restaurant experience to every breakfast, along with her talent as a pastry chef. Guests often ask about her hash brown quiche, and for good reason.

We’re always happy to accommodate dietary needs when possible. Just let us know when you book, and we’ll plan ahead.

We look forward to welcoming you to our historic home.

With gratitude,

Connie

While you will see pictures of our Shetland Sheepdogs “Liam”, “Gideon”, and “Miss Mollie”, you may never see them. Our dogs do not roam through the B&B; they reside in the owner’s residence. Should you like to meet them, just ask, and we would be happy to bring them out!
